About the Chorus and Theatre Ensembles
The Appomattox County High School and Appomattox Middle School Raiders Chorus and Theatre Programs are led by teacher/program director, Mrs. Brenda Jarrett. The Appomattox County High School Drama Club is led by Ms. Renee Hounsell.
Opportunities for Chorus students include Lynchburg College Choral Leadership Workshop, Longwood University Honors Choir, Virginia Honors Choir, All-District Chorus, All-Virginia Chorus, and various other concert and competitions throughout the year.
Theatre Class students are highly encouraged to become active members of the ACHS Drama Club with Ms. Hounsell. This after school theatre troupe provides opportunities to practice and perfect technical and acting performance skills learned in the classroom with Mrs. Jarrett. The Drama Club participates in the annual VHSL One Act Play Competition in the fall semester each year, and also prepares a play production each spring semester.
About the Choral and Theatre Director
Mrs. Jarrett was a selected participant in Shenandoah Conservatory's Advanced Admissions program prior to her senior year in high school and completed her Bachelor of Music degree at Longwood College with a concentration in Piano, secondary in Voice and Trumpet, and a double certification in both Choral and Instrumental Education tracks. As a member of the Longwood University Camerata Singers, she had the distinct privilege of performing around the Northeast with the most notable performances at St. John the Divine and Carnegie Hall. Her membership also garnered her the opportunity to serve as a backup chorister on Roy Clark's Christmas in Virginia CD and several annual live performances with him and his band. Since graduating, she has served as an assistant/substitute class piano teacher for Longwood University, a private vocal and piano instructor at Barringer Music Studios, a church pianist, and music director and pianist for over 30 musicals at various theatrical venues including Longwood University in Farmville, VA; Hampden-Sydney College in Hampden-Sydney, VA; Hackmatack Playhouse in Berwick, Maine; and Waterworks Players in Farmville, VA. She has also held acting and singing roles in various plays and musicals, most notably, Puss in Boots (as Tiddles/Puss); Doubt (Sister James); Picnic (Rosemary Sydney); Cotton Patch Gospel, and Rent (vocal soloist, pianist, mandolin and guitar player, and music director). Mrs. Jarrett has also had experience behind the scenes as a stage manager, lightboard operator, sound tech, set builder, and stagehand. Mrs. Jarrett also holds a "second career" as a performing singer-songwriter and recording artist with most notable performances in Nashville, TN; Jonica Gap, GA; Dewey Beach, DE (several years at the Dewey Beach Music Conference), and venues throughout Virginia. Her second career has taken a backseat to her dedication to family (namely the new arrival in 2014), her determined battle against melanoma (diagnosed 2014), and her drive and desire to arm her music and theatre students at Appomattox County Public Schools with all of the knowledge they need to see their own future successes in the performing arts.
